Born in Spain, he participates with enthusiasm in numerous projects related to creativity and improvisation in the field of classical, early and contemporary music. His activity as a pianist and fortepianist focuses on improvisation in historical styles, being one of the most outstanding young improvisers in the world to offer exclusively improvisation concerts in baroque, classical, romantic, impressionist and other styles of the 20th century. His activities include, among others, the completion of unfinished works by Mozart and Beethoven, the performance of improvised ornaments and decoration, varied reprises and improvisation of cadenzas.
.
Professor of Improvisation since 2010, he was recently awarded the Bourse Gäel Liardon 2024 at the Festival de Musique Improviseè de Lausanne in Switzerland, the first classical improvisation festival in the world, for his project of contribution to the study of cadences in classical style, with special emphasis on Mozart and concertos for piano and orchestra.
.
Strongly committed to reviving the practice of improvisation in relation to the existing keyboard repertoire of the classical period, he is interested in historical instruments and historically informed performance. He became the first fortepiano player to offer a fully improvised concert with works in classical style. In it, he improvised various preludes and fantasies based on suggestions from the audience and completed unfinished fragments written by W.A. Mozart, improvising the completion of the Fantasia K. Anh. 32, the Variations K. Anh. 38, the Sonata-movement K. Anh. 29 and K. Anh. 30. He has also participated as an improviser in numerous concerts organized by instrument museums, including the Haus der Musik of the Landesmuseum Württemberg, where he has had the opportunity to improvise on several occasions using the museum’s magnificent collection of historical instruments.
.
In relation to other projects, his collaborations as an improviser with silent films stand out. As a pianist, he has accompanied many of the most popular titles by Charles Chaplin, Buster Keaton and W.F. Murnau, participating on numerous occasions in the classic film cycles programmed in Spain in different locations. His interventions in improvisation with silent films have also led him to perform several times in the International Festival of Panticosa and in the International Music Festival of Anguiano, where he shared the stage with his students of all instrumental specialties in an improvisation ensemble project. As for opera and theater, the production of the entirely improvised opera for soprano, two violins, viola and piano, premiered at the GrosseSaal of the HMDK Stuttgart on a text by Roald Dahl, stands out.
.
Despite his conviction that improvisation concerts should be unique and unrepeatable, some of his interventions have been recorded in different media, among which the recordings of live improvisation concerts for the Südwestrundfunk SWR2 in Stuttgart and several television channels in Spain highlight.
.
Graduated from ESMUC in Barcelona as a pianist in the class of Professor Ramón Coll, a disciple of Vlado Perlemuter, this relationship proved vital to his passion and knowledge of impressionist music. In 2017 he obtained a PhD in Art History and Musicology from the University of Oviedo for his contribution to the study of the history of piano performance in Spain with cum laude mention. Among his research activities dedicated to performance, pedagogy and improvisation, he has authored book chapters, research articles and several monographs, with the support of the Government of Aragon and the Department of Education of the Government of Navarra.
.
In the field of improvisation he was self-taught. An admirer of great pianists and improvisers such as Keith Jarrett and Brad Mehldau, he completed his training in jazz piano as a secondary instrument during his stay in Barcelona with pianist Manel Camp. He continued to develop his improvisational skills in styles until the lockdown during the corona pandemic, where he discovered the recent Master in Piano Improvisation taught by Professor Dr. Noam Sivan at HMDK Stuttgart, former professor of improvisation at the Juilliard School. Announced as one of the first improvisation programs in the world, he became one of the first students admitted, he became the disciple of Prof. Sivan and specialized in improvisation in baroque, classical, romantic, impressionist and free improvisation styles, finishing his studies years later with the highest mark.
